Volcan Sierra Negra and Volcan Chico

The next day, Thursday, we hiked twelve kilometers to the rim of the active Volcan Sierra Negra and along the rim to a second younger volcano called Volcan Chico. The last eruption occured in 2005. Most of this trail is usually done on horseback but we heard that the horses were not fitted with horseshoes to protect their hooves from the rough volcanic rock so we opted not to go by horse. Upon return, when we reached the rim of the crater it started to rain. We were all soaked by the time we got low enough on the volcano to be out of the rain's range.
